<div>
<br />
<div>
I apologize it has taken me so long to post this. A few people asked if I would share my results so this is a little taste (I am still working on my analysis):</div>
<br />
<div>
</div>
<br />
<div>
</div>
<br />
<div>
</div>
<br />
<div>
</div>
<br />
<br />
<div>
*49 respondents, 36 of them were Moroccans</div>
<br />
<br />
<div>
*30 of the respondents are living in Morocco</div>
<br />
<br />
<div>
*9 of the respondents primarily blog in English, 15 in French, 6 in Arabic (19 people did not respond to this question)</div>
<br />
<br />
<div>
*21 of the 42 people that responded to the question of whether they considered themselves to be Muslims before Moroccans, said that they first considered themselves to be Moroccans first and foremost</div>
<br />
<br />
<div>
*44 (unanimous among those that answered this question) of the respondents thought that people should be able to write about anything they like</div>
<br />
<br />
<div>
*When asked about the most important events that have occurred in the Blogoma over the past couple of years, most mentioned events related to freedom of speech and/or human rights </div>
<br />
<br />
<div>
</div>
<br />
<div>
A couple of people did not like the last seven questions regarding religious orientation so I wanted to clarify the the purpose of these questions (I discussed them in the paragraph at the top of the survey but who reads instructions :)). I took them from a survey administered by Tozy and some other researchers at Universite Hassan II because I wanted to perform a regression analysis to see if the respondents of my survey were from the same population so I had to present the answers just as they had. I will post the results after I have brushed up on stats--it has been 2 years. That is all for now--I'll share more later.</div>
<br />
<br />
<div>
</div>
<br />
<div>
</div>
<br />
<div>
<br />
<br />
<div>
* 49 répondants, 36 d'entre eux étaient des Marocains </div>
<br />
<br />
<div>
* 30 des répondants vivent au Maroc </div>
<br />
<br />
<div>
* 9 des répondants blog principalement en anglais, 15 en français, 6 en arabe (19 personnes n'ont pas répondu à cette question) </div>
<br />
<br />
<div>
* 21 des 42 personnes qui ont répondu à la question de savoir s'ils se considèrent comme musulmans avant d'être marocaine, a dit que ils ont d'abord considéré les Marocains eux-mêmes </div>
<br />
<div>
</div>
<br />
<div>
* 44 (unanimité parmi ceux qui ont répondu à cette question) des répondants estiment que les gens devraient être en mesure d'écrire sur tout ce qu'ils aiment </div>
<br />
<br />
<div>
* Lorsqu'on l'interroge sur les événements les plus importants qui ont eu lieu dans la Blogoma au cours des deux dernières années, la plupart des événements liés à la liberté de parole et / ou des droits de l'homme </div>
<br />
<br />
<div>
</div>
<br />
<div>

I am not just being nosy :) When doing studies on groups of people, it is important to know about the population you are investigating not only so other researchers can improve on the information you gather but also so you know if the information garnered from your research can be applied to other groups or if your study is representative of the larger population to which it belongs. I hope this makes sense. Also, these surveys are completely anonymous and, other than the information provided on the first page, I have no idea who is responding to the other parts of the survey. Did this same event not occur just six months ago? Could the Kingdom of Morocco not avoid the media spectacle and the eventual pardon of this obviously harmless citizen?! I hope the next festival comes soon so he can be pardoned without delay. And we will have to forgive the judge--he was probably probably just grumpy from observing the fast. I'm sure that if Moroccans had a chance to vote on whether to keep the king or not, they would say to keep the king by a large majority because...they have been persuaded that the king is the one thing that Moroccans have in common. Morocco hasn't evolved its politics beyond the tribal level to a sufficient degree to hold the country together. You've got regional interests like the Rif and the Atlas, and you've got the important political families that are in competition with each other, like the Al Fassi family, which runs the Istiqlal party, so a lot of political parties are basically representing a collection of important political personalities rather than having a platform that they stick to. Even the socialists, I think, are more a collection of personalities, so people have broken off and formed other socialist parties that are more true socialists, because they feel that the USFP has become too much an apparatus of their leaders. Morocco is a political system with 37 official parties, and as a result various regions and groups don't even participate, like Al Adl Wal Ihssane that represents at least a couple of hundred thousand people is excluded from the political process. The Berbers feel excluded. The Rif tried to secede after independence and they were put down by Hassan II when he was still the crown prince, so ever since, you've got a strong sentiment there at least among some people [doubting] about even wanting to be part of Morocco. With all that, the king really is the only force that can claim to transcend all that division, and represent all of Morocco. So there are a lot of Moroccans that feel that they need the king, like it or not. Whatever disagreement they have with the political system as it is, they don't want it overturned because there would be some kind of civil war like in Algeria. And they respect him for giving stability. They may be the only Arab country that hasn't had a civil war in the last 50 years."</div><br /><br /><div>What do you think? You can post your comments here or send them to me through the email below. If you are interested in offering your perspectives on Moroccan culture, politics, religion and more, you can email me at <a href="mailto:rebecca.robinson@asu.edu">rebecca.robinson@asu.edu</a>. The survey is ready...I just need to have my colleague proofread the French. The idea is that God gave us the Qur'an as a complete understanding — well, it's not a complete understanding, but it's all that human beings would need to understand about God...so we are required to interpret it for ourselves…because another thing that the Qur'an emphasizes is that no one is going to stand in for us on judgment day. We are each going to face God alone based on our own actions. It's like the Christian idea that all people are created equal in the eyes of God — this is the basis for the democratic system. So I don't see any contradiction between Islamic ideas and democracy or the responsibilities of individuals within a democratic system to define right and wrong. I don't think the imam can do it for us and I don't think the Qur'an has answers to every possible situation...It's sort of like when Christians ask "What would Jesus do?" They use that analogy but Jesus didn't do everything possible. He did some things, so they say, "What would he do in this other situation that we don't have any record of him being in, based on the situations that we do know about?" It's the same thing. The Qur'an doesn't give instructions for every possible situation. We have to be our own judges. I think this is consistent with a democracy. I think the religious influence from the mosque about specific customs and festivals…that's a private affair that is separate from the running of the state. When you get to the bottom of the state, each individual has his conscience based on his moral system just like a Christian, a Jew, or even a pagan would." </div><div></div><div></div><div> </div><div> </div><div>I really enjoyed conducting the interview and gathering this rich data. There will be more quotes to come. I would like to thank Eatbees again for volunteering so much of his time and offering this valuable information. What is your take on his ideas? You can post your comments here or send them to me through the email below. If you are interested in offering your perspectives on Moroccan culture, politics, religion and more, you can email me at <a href="mailto:rebecca.robinson@asu.edu">rebecca.robinson@asu.edu</a>. By next week I should have an questionnaire available on surveymonkey.com as well that you can complete at your leisure. As soon as it is ready I will post the link here. I found out that I am not graduating until the spring so I took a research job this summer to help with the costs of an extra semester. We were also trying to finish the remodel on our house before our son arrived and we made considerable progress. Our son was born on July 23 and life with two kids has been a difficult transition. School starts in another few weeks and it will be another busy semester but I will try to post at least once or twice a week.<br /><br /><br /><br />Wow, avril s'est avéré être un très long mois ... Rebhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10950502380373087034noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8626156492747522922.post-7664675372045060252008-04-03T20:24:00.000-07:002008-04-05T14:01:27.937-07:00Interviews<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEineu9LGaMtl-245uRsG3XwtoZJYkw8f7s3bYSNg6lrxoKhQtJV96EH0pTMMBRkwcS9hYvC7NkVp5P4-ycRmKwA5zF4oSulsGwr8BEgqX_H8Cd9VuTO-AIeTZeXIO5_uEJPmuyml_y7PkcA/s1600-h/blog.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5185230977668779218" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEineu9LGaMtl-245uRsG3XwtoZJYkw8f7s3bYSNg6lrxoKhQtJV96EH0pTMMBRkwcS9hYvC7NkVp5P4-ycRmKwA5zF4oSulsGwr8BEgqX_H8Cd9VuTO-AIeTZeXIO5_uEJPmuyml_y7PkcA/s320/blog.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><div>I will be really busy with school until the end of April so I will not be around much. This is more evidence to contradict the theory that poverty leads to fanaticism, as several of the member of this network were professionals (a police commissioner was even implicated). Extreme Islam appears to be an umbrella response to dissatisfaction with the socio-political and economic situation of the country. Perhaps, extremism is often linked to poverty because the educated, affluent ringleaders rely on the impoverished recruits from the bidonvilles to detonate the bombs. The young, poor recruits hope to help their families with the monetary compensation for martyrdom. Another example of the wealthy profiting from human misery. This is an overly simplistic view (as, it appears, is the theory that poverty incites radicalism) but I am trying to make sense of the reason that so many scholars are attracted to this idea. Even using five theories to explain the phenomenon seems limiting when thousands of people are attracted to extreme Islam and each, being a different person, must have a different reason. I guess a lot of academia is putting people and events in little boxes and then trying the box on other people and events. I better stop before I really start babbling. I was saddened to hear that Fouad was sentenced to 3 years despite the campaign waged by Moroccan bloggers. Last semester, the literature review for my research proposal centered on five theories for explaining why political Islam has been gaining popularity in Morocco (poverty, dissent of the monarchy, anti-West sentiment, rejection of the separation of church and state, and radicalization through denial of the political process). I was following the discussion on <a href="http://www.citoyenhmida.org/">http://www.citoyenhmida.org</a> about Taha Balafrej encouraging bloggers to unite in an effort to improve the Moroccan educational system. Someone responded that blogs do not interest everyone (with which I agree) and asserted that only 100 attendees of the MBA was proof of this (with which I disagree). However, a major component of my research proposal is to demonstrate that this research is important. I have found journal articles that discuss how mainstream news media has been affected by blogging in the U.S. but I have not found similar evidence in Morocco's case. Is blogging important to Morocco and to the Moroccan bloggers and why or why not? Is it because, as the poster I mentioned above said, Moroccans can still speak freely without fear of prison? Why does this not also make blogging an effective tool for raising political awareness and action? On the aforementioned website, I commented that there are 30,000 blogs in Morocco so the medium must be reaching more than 100 people. In the U.S., there are far more people that read blogs than those that have blogs. Is this the case for Morocco as well? My initial reaction is that blogging is important, regardless of the number of people currently involved, because people are sharing idea, exposing biases, and motivating one another to action. Even if the community is currently small it can only become larger and more powerful.<br /><br />J'ai suivi la discussion sur le sujet http://www.citoyenhmida.org Taha Balafrej encourager les blogueurs à s'unir pour améliorer le système éducatif marocain. Rebhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10950502380373087034noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8626156492747522922.post-35591356772155375982008-02-05T21:25:00.000-08:002008-03-08T12:01:17.844-08:00I voted/J'ai votéI couldn't decide for whom I should vote.
